"Simulations in Developmental Disabilities"
by
Marcie N. Desrochers, Ph.D.
- SIDD is multimedia software that provides students or staff with
opportunities to acquire and practice skills in the area of applied
behavior analysis.
- Students assume the role of a behavior analyst whose duties involve
assessment and treatment of aggressive or self injurious behaviors
displayed by 10 clients with mental retardation.
- A functional assessment approach is emphasized throughout the
software.
- There are 10 client cases included in SIDD involving children
and adults displaying a variety of problem behaviors such as hand
sucking, head banging, and hitting.
- Depending on the client case, the problem behaviors occur at
school, home, vocational, or residential setting.
- The behavior analyst can conduct various functional assessments
to learn more about the clients problem behavior, such as
interviewing parents, staff, or teachers, viewing brief video clips,
conducting ABC observations, and performing functional analyses.
- The clients problem behavior may be a function of positive
reinforcement, negative reinforcement (e.g., demands, instructional
difficulty), or self-stimulation.
- The cause of the problem behavior is relevant for identifying
an effective treatment program.
